Although everyone one in Avon Lake hates the weather and climate, however at least we do not have to encounter the nasty annoyance of Plecia nearctica, members of the family Bibionidae, also referred to as Lovebugs that inhabit The Florida life. These bugs come in huge numbers and are not afraid of pilling up wherever they feel is a good spot to reproduce.

Two flights of lovebugs occur each year in Florida. The spring flight occurs during late April and May. A second flight occurs during late August and September. The periods of these bugs infestation last about 4 to 5 weeks. Mating takes place almost immediately after emergence of the females, which is why they are always seen attached to a mate. Adult females live only 2-3 days.
Lovebugs lay from 100 to 350 eggs which are deposited beneath decaying vegetation. The larva feed off of the vegetation until it grows and transforms into the pupal stage, which requires about 7 to 10 days for the transformation to be complete. Adult lovebugs are harmless and do not sting or bite.

A real concern with these bugs is that they can do real damage to your motorcycle or automobile. They congregate in unbelievable numbers along highways and the insects spatter on the windshields and grills of moving trucks and automobiles. The windshields become covered with the fatty remains and if the bugs pile up enough, the drivers vision is obscured. The flies also clog radiator fins causing people’s cars to overheat. The acid in their fatty tissue will also take the paint off your car if the bugs are wiped away immediately, like within 18 hours.
